Why your second brain must be yours (plain files, not SaaS)

Before you have anyone build you a second brain, one question to ask every vendor: if I stop tomorrow, what do I take with me?

For most AI tools the honest answer is: an export in a format you can’t use, or nothing at all. Your knowledge lives in their database, behind their login, in their structure. It works as long as you pay, and the day you stop, you lose your memory. That’s not a second brain. That’s a rented brain.

Our rule: plain files, your computer

Everything we build consists of ordinary text files (Markdown) on the client’s own computer. Next to a slick SaaS demo that sounds old-fashioned, and it is the most important design decision in the whole system:

You can open every file without us. Every note is readable in any text editor, and still will be in ten years. There is no format that disappears because a startup missed its Series B.
There is no lock-in, not even with us. Leave Second Brain Engineers tomorrow and your entire brain is still sitting on your own machine. Copy it, take it, done. We want clients who stay because it works, not because leaving hurts.
Your data trains no AI. The AI reads your files to help you, locally and per question. Your customer knowledge does not become training material for the next model.
Every change can be undone. Version control sits underneath the system. Every edit is recorded; nothing can quietly disappear or get overwritten.

Why this matters more than principle

Next to your people, your customer knowledge is your company’s most valuable asset. Twenty years of relationships, agreements, price history, sensitivities. You don’t put that inside someone else’s product, for three reasons that have nothing to do with technology:

Continuity. Companies that build AI tools disappear faster than companies that grow flowers. Your memory must not stop existing because a tool stops existing.
Confidentiality. A second brain contains what your customers told you in confidence. “It’s encrypted in our cloud” is a different answer than “it’s on your computer and only leaves when you decide”.
Leverage. Whoever holds your data sets your price. A vendor who knows that leaving costs you your memory never has to try hard for you again.

The test

Ask every second-brain vendor these three questions: where are my files, can I read them without your software, and what happens to my data when I stop? Anyone who can’t answer in one sentence is selling you a subscription to your own memory.
